Week 1 - 3, Trimester 3 2003/2004
We worked out a prototype for the web access and as well as the PDA application access during
Week 2. At week 3, the web services were out. Problems began to plague us along the way. I
spent a few days understanding the details of how XML web services actually work. Though the
Visual Studio .NET IDE tool simplified the development phase tremendously, I was still rather
curious on how actually the whole thing work. It took Tie whole three weeks to finally understand
the whole procedure.
June had her share of problem as well. Developing applications for PDA was quite a hassle.
Firstly, PDAs screen is small. Secondly, PDA has a very limited amount of memory and finally, VB
.NET is very much different from eVB. She took quite a long while to grab the flow of VB .NET.
Cheng Yong had problems with the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 as well. It seemed like the DBMS
was too complicated for the first timers. There were security controls which we need to setup,
some restrictions and as well as other technical issues related to create tables and linking them.
Week 4, Trimester 3 2003/2004
MMU Open Day was the following week. We rushed on our prototype. We felt the pressure. The
pressure came from our unfamiliarity with the developing phases and techniques. Since there was
no mentor, we trial-and-error our way through everything. By the end of Week 4, we managed to
prepare the posters for the MMU Open Day. By Friday of that week, we managed to put together a
working prototype which was far from completion.
Cheng Yong also prepared a few letters and had it signed by Mr. Hasnain and later had them faxed
to a few hospitals. We wanted to create a more realistic looking database based on real life data.
Week 5, Trimester 3 2003/2004
MMU Open Day was in Saturday. We polished everything up and also proceed a little further by
designing some other modules. Cheng Yong managed to apply from CITS an IP address for our
server. From now on, we could access our website/application from the Internet. Previously it was
limited to just Intranet.
The MMU Open Day preparation was great. We had a great time preparing it. Then again we
found out that our FYP title was too technical for the general public. Middleware communications,
new concepts and technical terms did not impress the crowds. However, it did impress some
lecturers! Not a bad attempt.
Week 6, Trimester 3 2003/2004
This week we did nothing. We had a few midterms. Next week would be the Chinese New Year.
No response still from the hospitals.
Week 7 8, Trimester 3 2003/2004
