Obstacles, Challenges and Solutions: Our Journey from Beginning to the End
Before Trimester 2 2003/2004
June Ng called up Lim Cheng Yong and mentioned to him about her idea of doing a Final Year
Project that regards the use of PDA.  Lim Cheng Yong looked up Tie Sing Chie to join in the team.
Three persons in a team make the optimal configuration.
The trio started to meet for a few times during late June until late July to discuss and propose the
final year topic.  June had decided that we approach Mr. Hasnain Zafar Baloch as our supervisor.
Him, Mr. Hasnain, wants us to come out with a proposal for the Final Year Project (FYP).
Therefore we agreed to meet in Malacca in the midst of our industrial training session and discuss
over the matter of choosing a topic.
June mentioned of using embedded Visual Basic (eVB) to develop a PocketPC application since
she used eVB during her industrial training.  Lim and Tie however were more towards the
familiarity of using WML and ASP each.  The trio had a few proposals verbally but none seemed to
work out.  Finally we took the initiate to approach Mr. Hasnain and seek him for advice.  June
approached him on the trio’s behalf and Mr. Hasnain responded by saying that the team can select
any topic which is related to wireless technology as the FYP if the trio wished to have him as the
supervisor.  He also suggested the trio to take up telemedicine since he was doing health
informatics as his Ph.D.
That consultation proved fruitful.  June drafted out a proposal and had Cheng Yong and Tie read it.
The title of the proposal then was “Physician-Patient Interaction via Bluetooth Technology”.  After
obtaining the agreement of all the members, Tie sent the proposal to Mr. Hasnain.  A few days
later, Mr. Hasnain responded with a changed title “Physician-Patient Interaction Solution via
Wireless Technology” and asked us if we agreed to the changes.  No one objected.  Therefore, Mr.
Hasnain sent the FYP proposal to the faculty office and had it approved.  He told us that the
chances of getting the approval were high.
Tie suggested that the trio used Microsoft .NET to develop the application for the FYP.  The trio did
some preliminary readings on the Microsoft .NET technology.
Week 1, Trimester 2 2003/2004
The topic for the FYP was released.  We did not find our FYP title being listed as approved by the
faculty.  We tried to contact Mr. Hasnain but he was outstation for an annual vacation.  There was
a technical complication between the faculty and our FYP proposal documents that in the end, we
had to delay our FYP starting date by at least a week.  We had to wait for Mr. Hasnain to return
from his trip to settle the problem.
